EVERYTHING FALLS APART

The moment you lay your hands on a first album from a band that you know absolutely nothing about, you know from the first track if something interesting is happening there.
Even though they’ve been around as a band for fifteen years, they have only put out one EP and taken part in producing a soundtrack for a movie (as mentioned in their band bio), Bad Mathematics only now decided to release their first album. Their dedication to their musical vision, which from the outset was fixed in their minds, finally finds its vindication on this release.
Their feet firmly in Punk, Bad Mathematics explore many different musical landscapes; at times in Art Rock, at times in Jazz and Swing; to create a mix which is impossible to leave the listener who sets out to explore their microcosm indifferent.
The point, of course, is not just the variety of their influences but also the seamless unifying of these influences, which is yet another aspect they succeed in doing. For example the effective way they blend their use of the trombone (sic!) and female vocals. The fans of Sonic Youth will especially appreciate their sound since this is an even more experimental version of that music, particularly in the case of some rousing tracks such as “Psychoblues”, “Pornography” and “Shiny Shoes”. Equally interesting in their quieter moments such as “Proud”, “Ghost” or “Hell Hole” with its wild drums.
In short, this first full-length release from Bad Mathematics proves a hit that justifies their hard work. If you are looking for something really wild and experimental this is it.

Everything Falls Apart

Bad Mathematics have the solution

In all probability, someone who is into music and lives in this city, has at some point crossed paths with Bad Mathematics and their fame and the magical image of a band that has made history. But this history has not been written down until now… at least not on record.

So, simple mathematics; the solution to the equation being the release of their album “Everything Falls Apart”, which changes the mathematical rules of the subject.
After what?  Fifteen (?) years together, serving their art and following their inspiration in this upside down place, where, in order to do something you love without compromising, you must also do something else to make a living; And have infinite patience and persistence… It’s an all too familiar story even in our new Internet-based neo-nostalgic era.
The good thing is that some essential things do not change – or change just as much as they need to; and listening now to the songs of a band which persists and evolves,  I strongly sense their refusal to get stuck in some trend – current or older – and the same mania they had when I first met them an afternoon, if I’m not mistaken, years ago somewhere near Karitsi square.
On point, out there and unrepentantly perfectionist, focused on what matters, their sound expresses them and their high rock’n’roll IQ perfectly, serving their improvisational tendencies in the best possible way.
It really doesn’t matter if it’s pulsating art rock, or jazz, or blues, or the funk elements in all their shapes- the transmutations rise like smoke from their tracks. Bad Mathematics have an identity; with Cassi’s voice “dancing” on the dynamics of the music, Andreas on guitar, Vishy on bass,  Michalis on drums and Orestis on brass, they proclaim the punk attitude they all share.
I confess there are moments where I hear something old fashioned; perhaps old-school, that feels like it needs one decisive act to take off, but then again this could very well be their own game plan given the use of time and the impressions it creates.
Besides, I hear lots of their different influences, spanning great expanses of time, filtered into their songs in a cinematic way;  and I say this because, from “Bitch” to “All Bets are Off”,  they have created an ideal action soundtrack for a punk-rock psychedelic-jazz adventure with constant twists and turns, where you do not care what happens in the end, only that the good guy wins. And Bad Mathematics have the solution.

Deafntineia Festival the Avopolis review 11.09.2003

I had heard only praise about the next band’s few previous appearances. Their performance not only proved everything I’d heard, but very much more. First some past history, since essentially this is the first time a review of this extremely exciting Athens-based band has appeared on Avopolis.

This four piece band is fronted by the English singer, Cassi Moghan, who, among other things, directed the play “Female Parts” (by Dario Fo & Franca Rame) at the Athinais Theatre, for which the band also composed the music. Last year they were voted best new band by Rock FM radio station, a fact which should have brought them a recording contract. This never happened, but let’s not rub salt into old wounds, this is neither the time nor the place.

As the internet freaks that we are, we must also mention their beautifully made and meticulous web site (https://www.badmathematics.com), one of the most intelligent we have seen in a long time, which, if nothing else, proves their sense of humour. The truth is that Bad Mathematics are worth it, and then some.

Perhaps the best Art Punk band that we’ve had the pleasure of seeing on the independent Athens scene, they move comfortably from Rock ‘N’ Roll through dirty Blues, and from there to Jazz and New Wave, all behind the generous power and authenticity of Cassi’s incredible vocals, and intelligent, well written lyrics.

Totally danceable and riotous at times, and experimental when they should be, Bad Mathematics are, as a major music publisher friend of mine pointed out, the only band in Athens today who could open the show for the John Spencer Blues Explosion who will be playing here next week. And that’s no small thing…

A review of the album “Everything Falls Apart” by friend and journalist Maria Markouli on her wonderful site… Go Read (In Greek) “Bad Mathematics Have the Solution

ADDED 24 JUNE 2007 We just had a wonderful comment posted about us on a Greek blog, where the writer places us in third place of the best thing during the whole festival,

VANITY RULES WE POST IT:

“I had no clue who the fuck they were before their live, but damn they are lean, mean, rock n roll machines. All of them excellent musicians that look like they can kick your ass too, once they get off the stage…

Which brings me to my point… Why had I never heard of them till yesterday? Why are bands like the Callas and Dread Astaire considered to be the saviours of Greek rock n roll when we got bands like Bad Mathematics?”

By Athens as it Really Is Thanks, nice to be told things like that.

WARNING: ANOTHER VANITY SPOT

Monofone a musician who was at the Soul gig wrote this about it!:

“all I know is that the last few days I was begging for a good old guitar-based live [maybe I got lost in my chaos of pads & loops and was up for a change 😉 ] and yesterday finally my prayers were heard..

Thanasis from Serpentine was fragile and sincere and with his acoustic set gave us some good melodies and a strong sense of song writing,while the Velvoids, whose singer declared to us incognito that they suck [ 😀 ], managed to give a real party feeling to the place..

But the real surprise were of course the Bad Mathematics, who managed to surprise me song after song with their garage/ post-punk/ avant-rock diamonds and whose singer was THE sexiest, most original rock ‘n’ roll front woman I have seen perform live in years..thumbs up for the underground Athenian rock ‘n’ roll scene..posh indie rich kids please do go and hang your disco shoes..You SUCK and you ain’t got no soul..”

Thanks Monofone, surely appreciate the kind words…Be seeing you.

ADDED 23 JUNE 2007 (this one is from The Management™)

IN THE LIGHT OF SOME RECENT BUZZ THAT HAS GATHERED AROUND THE BAND, IN THE PROCESS, BAFFLING US A GREAT DEAL, WHAT WITH GLOWING WRITE-UPS IN DIPHONO, ATHINORAMA, ROCK’N’POP MAGAZINES, AND MANY OF THE MAIN NEWSPAPERS IN GREECE, WE FEEL WE HAVE TO REITERATE OUR DEBT OF THANKS TO ALL THE REALLY GREAT BANDS THAT HAVE APPEARED IN ATHENS AND THE REST OF THE COUNTRY OVER THE LAST TWO OR THREE YEARS.

IT IS INTERESTING THAT WE SEEM TO HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE POSITION OF ONE OF THE BIG NAMES IN A SCENE WHICH NONTHELESS CARRIES ON BEING RATHER SPECIALIST AND CONSISTS OF A SMALL BUT DEDICATED FOLLOWING. WE’D LIKE TO NAME CHECK JUST A FEW, (AND BELIEVE IT THERE ARE MANY OTHERS DESERVING OF MENTION!).

HERE IS A LONG SALUTE TO THE ALEPH, MODREC, MISUSE, KOPSOKEFALI (NOW SADLY DISBANDED), THE WORKAHOLICS, ABSENT MINDEAD, SIGMATROPIC, GLORYBOX & LOWTRONIC, SPECTRAL FIRE, POST BLUE (GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN), CUBE, THE DIVE, JANE DOE, THE VELVOIDS, ILLEGAL OPERATION, SUGAR GALORE, SO WHAT?, VERSACE WIDOW (R.I.P.), COSTAS STERGIOU…

IN CONTINUATION THOUGH, AND ON A PERSONAL LEVEL WE’D JUST LIKE TO SHOW OUR APPRECIATION FOR TWO COMMENTS FROM TWO GREAT BANDS, WITH WHOM WE HAD THE PLEASURE OF PERFORMING AT STON AERA ON THE FIRST OF JUNE 2007. THE WORKAHOLICS AND THE ALEPH DID US THE HONOUR OF JOINING US IN A BLAZING SHOW ON THAT HOT NIGHT. THE NEXT DAY THIS IS WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY TO US (ASIDE FROM THEIR VERY KIND WORDS ON THAT NIGHT). WE’RE SO PROUD OF THIS THAT WE, VAIN CREATURES THAT WE ARE, WILL QUOTE THEM BELOW.

FROM THE WORKAHOLICS: Jun 2 2007 8:16

AND FROM THE ALEPH: Jun 3 2007 8:58

Bad Mathematics www.badmathematics.com

It may be that Bad Mathematics, apart from their appearance on the compilation Civil Cinder Regalia, haven’t yet circulated their work, but their site would make many well known artists envious.

The site of this English language indie band not only features news, history, photographs, lyrics and samples of their music for download, but also the very interesting newsletter of the group, Hard Times, which is designed like a real newspaper (!), reviews from the press, and a section for the band to express their personal opinions. It’s worth mentioning that the site is exceptionally well designed and has a flash intro with their music.

The Eleftheros Typos Interview 02.06.2007

During June 2007 we were interviewed by Eleana Kolouvou of the newspaper Eleftheros Typos, here is a translation of the article:

Bad Mathematics

For six years now, on a weekly basis, you can hear Jazz Punk melodies joining the distinctive voice of Cassi Moghan, from a backyard studio of a house in Immitos. Bad Mathematics originate from England (voice & bass) and Greece (guitar & drums), and take one stage after another without the help of managers or even a release on the market. “People hear our music and call up to invite us to play at festivals and different venues” says Vishy Moghan, “Self-promotion is one of the most difficult things for an underground band to do, there is no organisation here for arranging appearances”.

Thirteen years ago Cassi and Vishy came to Greece from England, and found that they go together musically with Michalis Karayiannis and Andreas Vatista, creating a very live type of sound.

“Our music is improvised, even down to the lyrics” notes Cassi, “But in live shows we don’t just play our music, we create performances, we live our sound”.

Q: WHY DOES A CITY NEED AN UNDERGROUND?

A: The underground scene is proof of life, it is the vibe of creativity – without it everything would be flat.

Saturday 30th of June 2007

Our dear friend and guru of the alternative scene in Greece posted an article on his Mixtape promotions site, which we had not seen before. It is always refreshing to read Ilias’ words and opinions about us. Here is the article, translated (probably badly) by Vishy, and the link to the original for those of you who can read Greek:

With Bad Mathematics, I have a very special relationship. I first saw them live at the Small Music Theatre a few years ago, when they’d just been voted “the best new Greek band” by a well known radio station. And my curiosity aroused, I was surprised that the said station, for the first time in years, had actually got it right!

Instinctively, I hoped that they would be recognised and become one of the ace cards of our stage.

But, a few years on they have remained where they were, unrecorded (apart from their appearances on two compilation albums, “Civil Cinder Regalia” from Tobruk Records, and the third volume of “In The Junkyard” by Spinalonga Records) and on the fringes, in spite of the fact that they get better year by year. And this constitutes one of the greatest injustices of our scene.

Of course the “problem” with Bad Mathematics is that it is not possible for them to be easily accepted by the listening devotees of the alternative scene.

Their dirty art-punk, which crosses Jazz with New-Wave, Garage with Psychedelia, Brecht with Tom Waits, isn’t the easiest fit for the straight rock ‘n’ rollers of mo’ Better, the indie popsters of Pop or the trend setting media intelligentsia. But, if you open your ears on the evening of Saturday at Soul Stereo and accept the authenticity of their British front-woman, Cassi Moghan, you’ll recognise the most undervalued band on the Athens scene. And you’ll understand why Bad Mathematics were chosen by Mixtape.gr to play at the European Festival of Music.

Ilias Piknadas (21.06.07) Read the article in Greek here Mixtape.gr.

Thanks Ilia it is always a pleasure to read what you have to say about the band. SAY IT LIKE IT IS…

The GIB Interview October 2003

In 2003 the band were interviewed by Panos Spoulos of the Greek Indie Bands Database and the band Postblue.

English

Panagiotis Spoulos: Bad Mathematics is an odd name. How did you decide to name your band? Were you all bad at maths when you were at school?

Vishy: well it was the title of some lyrics I had written, it must have been in 2001, and it became one of our early pieces that kick-started the sound that we developed, this strange mix of jazz rhythms and rock/blues thing. About this time we were looking for a name, and we were coming up with some really silly ideas, when someone, I can’t recall who, suggested we use Bad Mathematics, but it clicked immediately. It sort of became a signature tune for our early lives. And yeah I was really bad at maths. I’m not sure about the guys.

Cassi: It was one of those things, like everything the band does, a coming together of the four of us. We had created this song from lyrics Vishy wrote and one of us, no-one remembers who, came up with it as the name of the band. It stuck and it suited us. And yes, I was rubbish at maths at school too.

PS: I’ve seen you live twice and I can say that you do an unusual show, for example you improvise between and even during songs. How would you describe your music?

Vishy: that is a question we get asked a lot. I think for me the most exciting thing about the music is the way it is such a complete synthesis of the four members of the band. Absolutely everything we make is made in jams, including, incredibly enough, the lyrics. As Michalis pointed out once, we are all old enough and have heard enough diverse music, to have a thousand streams of influence. But for me the most characteristic and important aspect of the work is that special relationship between the four of us. I believe at our best we have an instinctive understanding of each others flow, and respond to one another at gut level. Whenever other musicians have attempted to jam with us, they’ve got lost very quickly and stopped playing. You know, music is like conversation, when you are in a situation where you really understand what the others are saying, intuitively you predict each others thinking, and respond in harmony, suggesting a new route to enhance what the other person is saying. When I was very young I used to listen to classical music, but the first time I heard funk, all that stopped. My father brought “Hot Buttered Soul” by Isaac Hayes home, and it completely turned my seven year old head. Later the first time I saw a jazz band, apart from the music, what totally made me want to listen to them was that they were like lovers, every member intricately intimate with the others, it was the pleasure in their faces, the expression of complete ecstasy that blew me away. I was hooked. My dream band would be something very much like Bad Mathematics, except we’d have the chance to be even more free on stage. So I guess that is how I would describe the music, an intimate conversation between good friends.

Cassi: That pretty much says it all, doesn’t it? Just to add, we are all coming from quite different backgrounds and musical influences and I think we bring all that experience to the band too. I hear jazz, punk, gospel, rock, Brecht and Weil, a diverse collection of sound that reflects the members of the band.

PS: Most of you are not Greek. Have you ever tried to do something abroad before you ended up here? Was it easier?

Vishy: not most of us, Andreas and Michalis are both Pireas boys. And no I personally haven’t. All the years I’ve been messing around with instruments, I just jammed ideas with friends, and never had any ideas about doing live work or serious recording. As for it being easier, in some ways yes, there are a lot more venues in London, and the pub circuit is the starting point for most of the great British bands, look at our mates the Tiger Lilies. I first met them in 93, in a small jazz club in Waterloo. And look at them now. Also the British music market is like a million times bigger than here. Almost any band that makes it there sells all over the world. Not so easy here, in a market saturated with Ellie Kokinou and Anna Vissi, to make new moves in music. After all even Pix Lax have started using bouzoukis. I think the main problem we face here is the lack of trust from the people and the music industry, in local product.

Cassi: Half of us are Greek! I was never in a band before but from my experience of working in Theatre in England I would say, that although there is so much more going on there, it’s a cut-throat world. One thing that is easier in England, is that people like experimentation and diversity more there. There is the opportunity to be different and people don’t look at new work with the suspicion and mistrust that happens here. One other thing about the market here, there is not enough intelligent criticism of work. By that, I don’t mean being negative about everything that comes along, but to be critical. In that way, truly good work can surface from the quagmire that is the Greek music scene. Vishy: I’d just like to add that Andreas and Michalis did have a band here in Athens, a three piece (guitar, drums and vocals), called Gobidibu (originally Paranihides), in the mid-80’s. They played short, explosive experimental tracks, along the lines of Beefheart and The Birthday Party, but they were too progressive for Greece all those years ago. If you look hard you’ll find them on some vinyl collections from that time.

PS: Do you believe that we’ll see some better opportunities in Greece?

Vishy: Oh yeah definitely, but bands like BM, Kopsokefali, and the rest in the underground scene need to get together and make people take notice, it’s like holding up a great big sign saying ‘WE ARE HERE, AND WE MEAN BUSINESS!”. And really where ever you are this music thing, if you want to be heard, is hard. In Greece we have another problem which is that we have to fight the way the industry is run by some very unadventurous people who don’t take risks and also make too many assumptions about the Greek public.

Cassi: We COULD see better opportunities for Indie bands here but several things have to happen first. We need exposure! Radio stations that play “home grown” Indie bands. It seems here that music has to come from abroad to be considered good. There are some great up and coming bands here, but do we have to make it somewhere else and then bring it back to Greece before it is even considered here? There is a strict code here about what is considered to be Greek music, what the Greek market will accept. And I don’t think that is the fault of the Greek music public. The blame is with the bosses and music industry people who are too short-sighted to see that the talent is here and has always been here. The “brain drain” that happens here across the whole Arts scene happens for a reason. people with ideas and talent leave because of the lack of respect and opportunity here. We need venues that will allow experimental and underground music to flourish like the Small Music Theatre and Ston Aera but more of them. We need DJ’s who are not afraid to play non-chart material, people like Major Tom who tried to get exposure for new bands like us. We need TV exposure. Just one programme to begin with, covering the Indie scene here in Greece. We need music magazines with the vision to include new bands in their pages. The Greek public don’t know us (and I include all the great underground bands around at the moment) because the media doesn’t allow them to know. I agree with Vishy that we need to get together and make people take notice, but the first people who need to take a good hard look at the way things are done here, are the media. The talent is here… Expose it!

PS: Can you introduce the band, please?

Vishy: Well we have Cassi on vocals, Andreas Vatistas on guitar, Michalis Karayiannis on drums and anything you can bang, and I’m Vishy Moghan on bass, and a few other bits and pieces.

PS: In your opinion what is the most successful way to advertise your music?

Vishy: Playing live. But if you mean what you would call it, a name for it, we have no idea. We’ve played with the idea of JazzPunk, and other odd titles, but I guess it’s difficult for us to say because it is just our music. Avopolis described it as Art Punk, it not a bad title.

PS: Plans for the future?

Vishy: Keep playing, develop a complete show, with performances getting wilder and freer all the time. My dream is to be able to go on stage every time and just play what ever comes in response to the occasion.

Cassi: I would like to see Bad Mathematics and our fellow Indie bands shake things up a bit. To see more diversity and collaboration and to push the boundary of the music scene in Greece a little bit left-field.

Greek

ΠΣ: Το “Bad Mathematics” είναι ένα περίεργο όνομα. Πώς αποφασίσατε να ονομάσετε έτσι το γκρουπ; Ήσασταν κακοί στα μαθηματικά στο σχολείο;

ΠΣ: Σας έχω δει ζωντανά δύο φορές και μπορώ να πω πως κάνετε ένα όχι και τόσο συνηθισμένο show, για παράδειγμα αυτοσχεδιάζετε ανάμεσα, ή ακόμα και ενδιάμεσα στα κομμάτια σας. Πως θα περιγράφατε εσείς τη μουσική σας;

ΠΣ: Οι περισσότεροι δεν είστε Έλληνες. Έχετε προσπαθήσει να κάνετε κάτι στο εξωτερικό πριν καταλήξετε εδώ; Ήταν πιο εύκολο;

ΠΣ: Πιστεύετε ότι θα δούμε περισσότερες ευκαιρίες στην Ελλάδα;

Vishy: Ναι, σίγουρα. Αλλά μπάντες σαν τους BM , τους Κοψωκέφαλους, και τους υπόλοιπους στην underground σκηνή πρέπει να κάνουν πράγματα μαζί και να κάνουμε τον κόσμο να μας προσέξει, σα να κρατάμε μια μεγάλη πινακίδα που λέει ‘ WE ARE HERE,AND WE MEAN BUSINESS!”.

ΠΣ: Μπορείτε να μου παρουσιάσετε το γκρουπ;

ΠΣ: Κατά τη γνώμη σας ποιος είναι ο πιο σωστός τρόπος να διαφημίσετε τη μουσική σας;

Vishy: Παίζοντας live.

ΠΣ: Σχέδια για το μέλλον;

The Ta Nea Review for CCR 19.3.05

H underground σκηνή της Aθήνας στο προσκήνιο Pοκ φωνές από τα υπόγεια ΜΑΡΙΑ ΜΑΡΚΟΥΛΗ This article was published on the occasion of the release of CIVIL CINDER REGALIA in 2005.

Tα πράγματα δεν είναι εύκολα αν παίζεις διαφορετικά από τον συρμό;

ΠΑΝΚ ME ΑΞΙΟΠΡΕΠΕΙΑ

Αλήθεια, τι είναι πανκ σήμερα; «Οι αξιοπρεπείς και αυτόνομοι άνθρωποι» Ένας στίχος σας που να σας εκφράζει; «This is the song my mother never sang to me, it’s a deep and endless sleep until tomorrow» (Αυτό είναι το τραγούδι που δεν μου τραγούδησε ποτέ η μάνα μου, είναι ένας βαθύς ατέλειωτος ύπνος έως αύριο).

tanea_trypanosomaTrypanosoma

Πώς φαντάζεστε τον ιδανικό σας ακροατή;

Έχουν καθόλου αλλάξει τα πράγματα για κάποιον που κάνει μουσική και δεν έχει σχέση με τα μπουζούκια στην Ελλάδα;

Αν δίνατε κάποιο μουσικό βραβείο, ποιον θα θέλατε να τιμήσετε;
